Some people make my head hurt more than others. To those that may read this, you probably already know of the troll bombmustachefiend laid on some of those with, shall we say, more fickle interpretations of what is “allowed” to happen on the Internet. With their Internet police badges printed out and hanging proudly above their computer, they weren’t about to let something as serious as posting pictures on a site, engineered for picture sharing no less, go unmonitored and escape their vigilante justice.
See, she posted these pairs of gifs to a rather touching interpretation/moment from Doctor Who.

Isn’t it just adorable?
Now Cassie (Miss Fiend if your nasty) found these images on reddit. And as reddit is aught to do, it gave no fucks about giving credit or sources in what they consider just another fucking gif. Now they thought of these gifs that way because, frankly, they are just another fucking set of gifs. However, our keyboard cowboys caught wind of this and sent many not nice comments to Miss Fiend, some of the ruder ones anonymously.
Now Miss Fiend normally doesn’t give a shit about haters, and this was no exception. But when people say things like this, you have to either take advantage of the potential comedy, or ignore it. I am glad we went with comedy:
IF SOMEONE COPIES BITS OF A BOOK, IT’S CALLED PLAGIARISM, AND IT’S A HUGE DEAL. People get thrown out of universities, or schools. People lose their jobs, and can’t find others. Stealing is a crime too. But then you say it’s okay to steal graphics that someone spent hours on making? It’s not easy, you know, it’s art. You claimed it as your own, even if that wasn’t your intention. Just because it’s on the internet, doesn’t mean you have the right to steal, doesn’t mean you can get away with it - Anonymous coward
Thats right, you are NOT getting away with this. You reposted a PICTURE, on the INTERNET, but in this case it was created by someone that they felt some sort of connection to, by either knowing them in real life or just following them, and that makes this picture special. But heres why this whole thing is funny… this picture is not special, this gif is not a unique fucking snowflake, it’s just an image like a bazillion others. See those gifs have no more significant or value than this one:

Only this one actually took a lot of work, so I feel a little bit more guilty about not citing the source, which is still hardly at all. You post an image to the void, the void isn’t going to ask permission to share it again.
See, the delusion comes in when it’s THEM, not when it’s someone else. The irony is that the plagiarism actually occurred when the gif was made. The original gif creator’s horde did not see the irony that the maker took someone else’s art, moved it to another medium, and then had they had the audacity to say sharing such a creation was plagiarism/stealing/wrong when the entire basis and foundation for it was on “theft.” But we don’t, and shouldn’t, care. The BBC doesn’t seem to care or send takedown notices, and they actually have a leg to stand on.
Now here is where the whole episode gets stupid. Miss Fiend and others whoposted the same set of gifs didn’t do it to say “fuck you” to the gif creator, her followers or those who were rude. The point was simple
It was to point out how stupid it was that they cared.
How out of touch with reality that they thought despite every image that goes without source and is shared all the time to others, this one was different. That instead of being flattered so many people liked the scene, and her theft/interpretation of it, they thought the important thing was to make sure it was shared on their terms. That an image, probably anything really for them, becomes more important when it has some relativity to their world.
So the moral of this long stupid story is that you really don’t own anything on the Internet if your name isn’t on it. And even if it does have your name on it, we probably still won’t care. Thats kind of why people like it here, and it has such huge level of participation.
I love you Internet, never change.
